Flexi-timing is no longer limited to working mothers. Today, more and more professionals are being given the option to work out of home. The increasingly popular entrant to the home-office menu? Medical transcription. It is not new for Indian companies to tie up with hospitals and private physicians in the USA and UK—a Nasscom report says there are about 120 to 250 such firms in India.
Editing transcribed medical notes dictated by doctors in the US allows her to make Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. With the help of suitable software installed in her home computer, George downloads the transcribed files and edits them before sending them back to the office.

The medical transcription sector in India went through the boom-to-bust cycle faster than you could say ‘business process outsourcing.’ Today, it is making a quiet return.
Shrikant Inamdar, executive director of Spryance, pointed to the shortage of trained personnel, which has adversely affected Spryance’s growth. “We need 2,500 people in the next two years. We could have done three times more business if we had more editors. We have 180 editors and need 300. In the next two years, we need 800.” The industry has ............
The frontier of medical outsourcing to India and other low-cost economies is extending by the day. Medical outsourcing is a big-buck opportunity. The global healthcare outsourcing market, with all services put together, is approximately $71 billion in 2005. Healthcare BPO is a $200-billion business worldwide. India accounts for only $110 million of the healthcare BPO business though the opportunity in the next three years is for $5-$6 billion of this market.
According to Nasscom, medical transcription is projected to be India’s fourth largest foreign exchange earner in about five years. “The employment potential of transcription services would be 1,60,000 by 2008,” says ............

"Working online has to be the greatest example of leveling the playing field for everyone" CNN.com
Several years ago, I was able to return to school via an online course offered by Andrews School of Medical Transcription. My blindness was not a factor. It did not affect my grade or ability to do the work required. 10 months, I was able to graduate from Andrews School without attending a brick and mortar classroom.
Finding work was not an issue because a national company offered me employment shortly before graduation. My office was in front of my computer within the confines of my home. I was able to work in a field where sight did not matter.
